Study Abroad Financial Aid

An international experience during your college years is an investment in your future. The eye-opening experiences you will be exposed to and the long-term benefits you will gain make it well worth any extra cost.

Planning ahead and saving your money should be your first step. Start early to identify sources of financial assistance. Don't wait until you've been accepted, or even until you've chosen a program. Know what's available now.

Keep in mind that affordable opportunities do exist for studying abroad. Financial aid may apply to most programs and scholarships are available. Do not be discouraged. Review the financial aid/scholarship information and speak to the Office of International Education to review affordable possibilities.

Financial Aid

If you qualify for financial aid (federal aid, grants, loans, scholarships, etc.) through SUNY Cobleskill, you can transfer that aid to an approved study abroad program in most cases. If you are currently receiving aid, you should apply for renewal of financial aid just as you would if you were staying on campus.

The Office of International Education can help you create a budget for your particular study abroad program. This budget will serve as the basis for determining your financial need with the Financial Aid Office for the term abroad. If the expense budget is higher than expenses at SUNY Cobleskill, you may request additional funds, in the form of loans, to cover the excess expense, or apply a larger portion of your financial aid toward the abroad term. Some restrictions do apply, so discuss financial aid with the Office of International Education early in your planning.

Scholarships

In addition to the financial aid that will apply toward study abroad, many scholarships, grants, and awards exist to assist with costs. It is imperative that you begin the process of searching for scholarships early in your planning process. Some programs even offer their own grants and awards, so be sure to ask your program representative early in the process.

Be cautious of scholarship scams that ask for money or personal information upfront. A legitimate program will not do this. If you are unsure about the integrity of a program, ask the Office of International Education about it.
